Discover Stella Luna

Walking into Stella Luna at 40696 Village Dr, Big Bear Lake, CA 92315, United States feels less like stepping into a restaurant and more like being welcomed into a cozy mountain ritual locals quietly treasure. The first time I stopped in was after a long morning hike near the lake, cold air still clinging to my jacket, and the warm aroma of espresso and freshly prepared food instantly did its job. Places like this don’t rely on flash; they win you over with consistency, comfort, and an obvious respect for what they serve.

The menu strikes a balance between Italian-inspired café classics and diner-style favorites that work just as well for breakfast as they do for a late lunch. On one visit, I ordered what the barista confidently described as house-made gelato, and it lived up to the reputation. Research from the Italian Gelato Association notes that authentic gelato contains less air and butterfat than traditional ice cream, which explains the dense texture and clean flavor Stella Luna delivers. You can taste that difference immediately, especially in seasonal flavors that rotate based on ingredient availability. That kind of rotation is usually a good sign; it means the kitchen isn’t cutting corners.

Coffee here is treated with the seriousness it deserves. According to data from the National Coffee Association, over 60% of Americans drink coffee daily, and quality matters more than ever. The espresso at Stella Luna is smooth, balanced, and never burnt, which suggests proper extraction and well-maintained equipment. Watching the staff work, you can see a clear process: beans weighed carefully, milk steamed with intention, and drinks served without unnecessary delay. It’s the kind of routine you’d expect from people who actually care about their craft rather than rushing through orders.

What really stands out, though, is how the restaurant fits into Big Bear Lake’s rhythm. Families wander in after shopping nearby, couples linger over dessert, and solo travelers flip through their phones while enjoying a quiet meal. Reviews often mention the welcoming staff, and that tracks with my experience. On one occasion, a server noticed I was undecided and recommended seasonal specials, explaining which dishes were better suited for colder days. That level of personal insight usually comes from people who eat the food themselves, not just sell it.

From a broader perspective, establishments like Stella Luna benefit from the growing interest in experiential dining. A 2023 report by the National Restaurant Association highlighted that diners increasingly value atmosphere and authenticity over sheer portion size. This place understands that instinctively. The décor is warm without trying too hard, and the layout encourages conversation rather than turnover. It’s not rushed, but it’s also not inattentive-a balance many restaurants struggle to maintain.

There are limitations worth mentioning. During peak tourist seasons, seating can be tight, and wait times may stretch longer than expected. That said, the food quality remains consistent even when the place is busy, which isn’t always a given. It’s also worth noting that while the menu covers a lot of ground, it doesn’t try to be everything to everyone, which actually works in its favor.

Overall, Stella Luna operates with a quiet confidence rooted in real experience, thoughtful preparation, and a clear understanding of what diners come to Big Bear Lake looking for. Whether you’re scanning reviews before choosing a spot or stumbling in hungry after a day outdoors, this restaurant earns its reputation the honest way-one well-made plate and one carefully poured cup at a time.

  • The food was so good, our waiter Derek was really nice & attentive! The owner also came out to check on us & had a quick chat. Very sweet. Would highly recommend!

  • A great scratch kitchen in Big Bear Lake city and delicious food. The restaurant is very modern and has a great selection of foods. Our server was also very kind and helpful and did his best to attend to us. But I will give some constructive feedback: - Giving dirty paper menus that have been stepped on and have water and drink marks on it is very much so not nice. It does not give the best look of the restaurant to the customers. Laminated paper menus would be great because they would not get dirty and can get cleaned well. - Our water cups were not clean. We weren’t sure if they weren’t cleaned at all or weren’t cleaned well, but it’s not nice to be given cups that aren’t cleaned well. Please make sure the dishes are cleaned well before serving. Otherwise, the food is excellent!! The quality of the meat and everything else were great!! With some improvements to the service, this restaurant can become one of the best in the area.

  • I forgot to take photos of our meals, but we got the Salmon entree, Buffalo Chicken Meal and my sister and I shared. Both meals entirely gluten free as well as the cake, and our appetizer (Spinash and Artichoke Dip). Everything was wonderful and our server Leticia was amazing 10 out of 10 would come back here again!

  • Came in for a bite at lunchtime and was seated immediately. Nice outdoor patio and the interior has nice half booths against the wall, but the decorations are pretty sparse. It looks a bit sterile in there. It could use some coziness. I started with some focaccia table bread, and the consistency of it was lovely, but there were no fresh herbs anywhere to be seen or tasted. When I usually order focaccia bread, you get a cornucopia of lovely fresh herbs and this had none. I then had the arugula burrata salad and that was delicious. Nice balsamic glaze with plump raspberries and strawberries, and the Burrata was very creamy with a large portion. Pretty fair prices.

  • --- Coming from a vibrant metropolis like Mexico City, arriving in Big Bear, California, can initially feel like a culinary challenge. However, to our pleasant surprise, on the third day of our visit, while searching for a more varied and perhaps slightly more refined breakfast, we discovered this lovely spot. The warmth and charm of the place perfectly reflect the spirit of Big Bear. Not only was the service exceptionally friendly, but the food was of a much higher caliber than we expected, offering a wide variety of options. There are vegan and gluten-free choices, making it inclusive for different dietary needs. Despite being in a smaller town, we felt like we were dining in a refined restaurant you'd find in New York or Mexico City. It was truly a wonderful experience, and we highly recommend it to anyone visiting Big Bear! ---

  • This is a must visit in Big Bear if you're a foodie. *Food is cut and prepared fresh once you order, so don't go if you have a tight schedule. However, if you're good with a leisurely brunch, then it's highly recommended. Everything was delicious and very good quality. Absolutely recommend the Focaccia Bread (on its own or in any dish) and the Blue Crab Benny! We also had a Traditional Breakfast with chorizo, a Grilled Cheese with Caramelized Onions and Mushrooms with Sweet Potato Fries, a Vegan Chorizo Burrito with the Fire Roasted Cherry Tomatoes and Avocado. Not a single item was sub par. Best sweet potato fries I've had in decades, and the flavour of the tomatoes and avocado were unbelievable. Grab some Focaccia bread with balsamic and oil, you won't be sorry. The hot chocolate comes with roasted marshmallows! Sarah took care of us, and she made sure our food orders were correct. Vegetarian and vegan options are available and clearly marked. Loved the food here!
